The first memory came without warning.

A door opened onto a room she had never seen. Hands — her hands, and yet not hers — rested on a table scored with fine geometric marks. Light entered through a narrow window at an angle she somehow knew belonged to late afternoon. Someone laughed in another room.

Then the vision vanished. She stood motionless in the corridor, the warmth of the ember still beneath her skin.

Another memory arrived. A face reflected in dark water. A bell sounding below a stone floor. The smell of dust after rain. Grief for a name she had never learned.

The memories did not feel invented. They came with the texture of lived experience: the weight of objects, the pressure of weather, the familiar ache of loss. Lives seemed to lie beneath her own like earlier writing beneath a reused page, never fully erased.

She began to fear sleep, though she could no longer be certain she was awake.

Then she saw a woman standing at the far end of a chamber. The stranger turned. Fear passed across her face, followed by recognition.

She knew that face. It was her own.

Across the chamber, the other woman watched her with the same dawning disbelief. For one suspended instant, neither moved.

The vision fractured. Stone returned. The corridor was empty.

She could still remember her own life. She simply no longer knew whether it was the only life remembering her.
